Wee Tots is a full inclusion preschool class. It is an extension of the PIE program. The class consists of 1-12 students with an equal ratio of children with and without learning differences. Children from other PIE classes also have the opportunity of being mainstreamed into Wee Tots at appropriate times throughout the morning or afternoon session.
Wee Tots was designed to teach children preschool and kindergarten readiness skills in a language enriched environment. Wee Tots was created for children receiving services that are ready for a more independent and challenging learning environment. Attendance in the Wee Tots Program is designed to expand socialization skills, encourage exploration and a love for learning while still benefiting from a smaller, more supportive setting.
It is held at the St. Anthony's School building in Northvale along with the PIE and Valley Programs. Within the typical preschool setting, children with learning differences will share in designated activities throughout the day.
Wee Tots was developed with the typical preschooler in mind. Typical preschoolers are children who are ready for or have been attending a preschool program and do not have identified learning differences in areas such as speech, behavior or motor skills. The program was designed to enhance other preschool experiences, expand socialization skills, increase independence, develop kindergarten readiness and encourage exploration and curiosity.
This program is also designed to foster sensitivity to those with learning differences and to accept them as part of a typical classroom setting.
Wee Tots provides a curriculum organized around preschool and kindergarten readiness skills, is taught by a certified, experienced teacher, features a low student/ teacher ratio, and follows the Northern Valley school calendar.
Two sessions are available. The morning session is from 8:45-11:15 a.m. and afternoon session is 12:45-3:15 p.m. Families with preschoolers may want to consider Wee Tots as a supplement to a half-day preschool their child may already be attending.
