To the Members of the Northern Valley Community:
Region III, composed of nine towns, Alpine, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Harrington Park, Haworth, Northvale, Norwood and Old Tappan, has run and continues to run a special education program for pre-school and elementary school children at St. Anthony’s building in Northvale. The Northern Valley Regional High School District serves as the Lead Education Agency for this program in that the Board of Education and school officials administer the program.
Concerns have been raised by teachers who taught in Room 5 in the building. Two teachers who recently worked in the room suggested there could be a relationship between their newborns’ learning disabilities and their workplace. Soon after, it was confirmed that many staff members felt the same about the building. At this time, officials from the school district have met with the health official from the Borough of Northvale, the Mayor of Northvale, the County Superintendent of Schools and staff who work in the building, as well as parents of students who attend the school.
Initial air quality testing and the ongoing asbestos management program reveal no levels above the acceptable range. Tonight, June 19, at 7:30 p.m., a public meeting will be held in the council chambers of the Town Hall of Northvale. At that time, health officials will announce a plan for further testing.
Due to the high level of anxiety, the summer program will be relocated to County Road School in Demarest, New Jersey. Alternative plans for the fall are being explored. However, that decision will be depend upon information from health officials during the next few weeks.
